Flavious Josephus "F.J." Hanberry, Jr., age 101, of Cadiz, Kentucky, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, April 12, 2024, with family by his side.

Born October 19, 1922, in Trigg County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Flavious J. "Flave" and Bessie (Williams) Hanberry.

F.J. grew up surrounded by a large and loving family, including seven siblings, learning the value of hard work. He attended school through the 8th grade at Canton.

As a young man, F.J. answered the call to serve his country during World War II, enlisting in the United States Army on 17 Dec 1942. After completing his training, F.J. was shipped out from New York and arrived in Europe eleven days later, 27 July 1943. His job as a supply clerk took him across the European theater, from the shores of England to the battlefields of Normandy, northern France, and Central Europe, providing much-needed supplies to frontline troops. His dedicated service was recognized with the EAME Ribbon adorned with three Bronze Stars, among other commendations. Returning home on 10 Dec 1945, he was honorably discharged just days later, carrying with him the pride and respect of a grateful nation.

Following his military service, F.J. channeled his disciplined work ethic into a successful career as an auto mechanic, first turning wrenches at Henry White Chevrolet, then later Wilbur Boggess Chevrolet, from which he retired in August 1985. But his talents were not limited to the garage, as F.J. also worked as a farmer and truck driver. He found satisfaction in a job well done.

F.J. was a longtime member of Canton Baptist Church and a 79-year member of both the V.F.W. and the American Legion, exemplifying his commitment to his fellow veterans and his country. At the age of 100, he was honored to serve as the grand marshal of the 2022 Cadiz Veterans Day Parade.

F.J.'s home was his sanctuary, a place he kept with meticulous care. He found joy in mowing the lawn, tending to his property and ensuring everything was in perfect order. His love for the outdoors extended to leisurely fishing trips, enjoying watermelon with the family in the backyard, and cruising about town in his classic blue 1976 Chevy Caprice Classic four-door hardtop, which was always spotless.

Above all, F.J. was a true gentleman, caring for others, deeply devoted to his family, a favorite uncle, a man of his word, and a life well-lived. He was a model of the Greatest Generation and an embodiment of the best values of his time.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Maxie Hanberry, Jack T. Hanberry, and John R. Hanberry; and four sisters, Adeline Clark, Estelle Shemwell, Maebelle Collins, and Olivia Callahan; two nephews and a niece.

F.J. is loved and survived by 11 nephews and nieces, including his devoted caregiver, Tommy Hanberry and wife Donna of Cadiz; 18 great-nephews and nieces; nine great-great-nephews and nieces; and sisters-in-law, Betty Jones Hanberry of Cadiz and Debbie Hanberry of Valparaiso, Ind.

Memorial contributions can be made to Pennyroyal Hospice, 220 Burley Ave., Hopkinsville, KY 42240, or to the East Golden Pond Fire Department, 4286 Canton Rd., Cadiz, KY 42211.
