Cadiz Rotary Club Embraces Impressive Tuesday Auction Effort

A bidding war for a rare piece of Trigg County’s history, and remembrance of a late club supporter, served as prime examples of strong spirit during Tuesday’s “Night No. 2” of the 57th Annual Cadiz Rotary Radio Auction in the Cadiz Baptist Church Annex.

And, in the end, it led to a colossal cash effort for the youth and senior citizens of Trigg County.

Among the items Rotarian Cy Dossett brought to this year’s tableau: a certain antique magazine, signed by a certain duo rich with hunting knowledge and business savvy.

For more than two hours, this item roped a frenzy — and generated nearly 20 bids in the stretch.

Trigg County High School Principal Tim Bush, and other Cadiz natives, sprang on the action, before a phone call came in from Lexington, Kentucky.

Not to be outdone, Joe Nichols of Seven Springs Farms reportedly indicated he and his wife, Ashley, weren’t to walk away without the folio — and eventually secured it with a $5,000 tag.

Gran, a frequent hunter and friend to Knight & Hale, texted Dossett: “That’s awesome. Tell Harold ‘I love him.’”

Later on, Norman Cotton channeled the love many shared for 78-year-old Vonnie Dalton Thomas Holsapple, of Cadiz, who always used to make fried pies for the auction.

Born October 23, 1945, in Princeton, she had been a waitress at Cadiz Restaurant, a retired employee of American National Rubber, a volunteer at The Way, a member of Canton Baptist Church and a widow, when she died Sunday, January 21 — leaving behind a loving family and a second husband of 30 years, who took up the Rotary mantle.

Lawrence wound up snagging those apple delights for $300, while a dozen of the peach version went for another $100.

In all, 85 items were sold on air for $14,723, online sales equaled $4,089, and the Country Store made $463 — for a grand total of $19,275.

For comparison, the 2023 Tuesday effort made just over $4,400 in live sales and $6,400 online.

More than $36,000 has been raised in the last two days.

News Edge President & CEO Beth Mann noted that in those final moments before 9 PM, more than 190 people were online bidding through the wkdzradio.com “Big Deals” page — where many of the listings remain open for battle.

“Big Board” sponsors for 2024 are the HCC Foundation, Novelis, Rogers Group and TVA, and the “Bell” sponsor Tuesday was Scott Sanders & Bollinger Real Estate.

Night No. 3 begins at 6 PM Wednesday, with officials from The Way crafting lasagna plates.

Major items will include a Herb Hays Furniture Serta mattress valued at more than $4,500, a three-piece wicker patio set, a Stallons Auto Sales tandem trailer, a Mossy Oak Apex Ammo/Cigar Box limited edition signed by Knight & Hale with turkey-hunting shells, a late 19th Century carved oak hall stand from Carolyn & Terry Hamby valued at $3,000, a Kate Spade New York black tote, a loaded toolbox from Hopkinsville’s Hutson, Inc., and so much more.
