For the last five decades, Victor’s Sandwiches in Murray has been a staple of long-time locals, Murray State University students and alumni alike.

Its perfect location next to the seasonal Dairy Queen made it an easy walk from campus, and its menu was tried and true.

This legacy unfortunately ended last weekend, when long-time proprietor Victor Olazabal Jr. died Sunday, April 14, 2024, at his home.

He was 69.

Born August 13, 1954, in Havana, Cuba, his survivors have announced that, moving forward, his shop will not continue.

He leaves behind two daughters, Cassi Olazabal, of Murray, and Rachel Newnam and husband, Bobby, of Seattle, Washington; one son, Victor Olazabal III, of Owensboro, and fiancé, Andrea Cossier, of Murray; one sister, Lillian Gierhart and husband, Greg, of Murray; as well as four grandchildren and one niece.

There are no public services scheduled at this time.

Officials at The Keg in Murray have announced a rebate night in honor of Victor and his family, set for Thursday, April 25, and they have issued a challenge for other Calloway County eateries to do the same.

In a written statement, Keg officials also noted they “take great pride in being locally owned and ran,” and that Victor’s death was “unexpected and heartbreaking,” and that he was someone that always had a smile and always had something to say.

All proceeds and donations can go to Cassi Olazabal, 35 Crawford Trail, Murray, KY 42071.
