After two double digit losses to Florida during the regular season, the Kentucky Wildcats gave the Gators all they wanted in the SEC championship game Sunday afternoon, before things slipped away from them literally at the end, as the Gators held on for a 61-60 win. The Cats trailed Florida by as many as 16 in the second half before mounting a furious rally.
UK had the ball in the final seconds with a chance to win, but James Young slipped coming around a screen, and the horn sounded during a furious scrap for the ball on the floor.
Up next for the Cats is a first round NCAA tournament game on Friday against another bunch of Wildcats from Kansas State. Many were a bit shocked that Kentucky fell all the way to a #8 seed, and will now face the #9 seed Kansas State, in what many say is the toughest region in the entire tournament. Should the Cats advance past Kansas State, they would likely face #1 seed, and unbeaten, Wichita State.
Other teams in the Midwest Region include Louisville, Duke, St. Louis, UMass, Texas, and Michigan. Louisville and Michigan played in last year’s national championship game. 106.5 WKDZ will have coverage of Kentucky against Kansas State coming up this Friday.
