Snake Handling Preacher Dies After Bite

A preacher who gained national attention for his snake handling beliefs on the National Geographic Channel is dead following a snake bite Saturday evening. According to the Lexington Herald Leader, Jamie Coots, of Middlesboro, died after being bitten by a snake during a church service Saturday evening. The report says paramedics were called to Coots’ church about 8:30pm Saturday to the report of someone being bitten by a snake.

By the time they arrived, Coots had gone to his nearby home. Medical personnel went to Coots home, but he refused treatment, due to his beliefs, and died a short time later.

Coots was prominent among the small, close-knit circle of snake-handling churches in Eastern Kentucky, West Virginia, East Tennessee and Alabama. However, he gained wider notice last year though the television show “Snake Salvation.”
