The investigation into the murder of Chantelle Humphries has taken a dramatic turn. Commonwealth's Attorney G.L. Ovey has filed a motion seeking a subpoena for Trigg County Sheriff Ray Burnam to appear in court and produce copies of his investigation file, investigative notes, and phone logs, regarding his independent investigation into the death of Chantelle Humphries.
In the motion, Ovey points to an email sent by Sheriff Burnam to Lt. Brent White of the Kentucky State Police, in which Burnam stated that he must be getting close to solving the crime, as he was getting death threats and being warned to leave things alone. In the motion, Ovey says the Commonwealth has received no information, either written or oral, from the Sheriff or anyone acting on his behalf in regards to findings in the case.
The motion further states that if Sheriff Burnam is going to continue to pursue the case and not cooperate with the agencies charged with pursuing the case, it is imperative that his investigative notes, phone call logs, case file report, and any other information or evidence he may possess, be presented to the Commonwealth Attorney's Office for review.
The motion makes mention of Sheriff Burnam's use of the local media and social media to announce the offering of a reward for evidence in the case, as well as a press conference on November 27th. In the email sent by Sheriff Burnam to Lt. Brent White, the Sheriff claims he was lied to about the investigation and how it was going to be handled.
Also, in the email, Burnam tells White that he will back away from the investigation into the murder of Harvey Choate, for the time being. The email was sent to White on November 28th. The subpoena motion will be argued in court, December 12th, at 1:00pm.
