In a time when giving might strain an already tight budget, the communities in the Pennyrile region are stepping it up and giving back in to the tune of $754,163. The United Way of the Pennyrile officially wrapped its 2012 campaign Thursday night with the annual dinner, where campaign co-chair Hopkinsville Mayor Dan Kemp teased everyone before the start.
Campaign Chairs started the evening off with recognizing Chairman's award recipients-Walmart Distribution Center for the Commercial Division, Christian County Public Schools for the Education Division, Hopkinsville Fire Department for the Government Division, Ebonite for the Industrial Division, and Jennie Stuart Medical Center for the Professional Division-and the Spirit Award winners-Bank of Cadiz for the Commercial Division, Millbrooke Elementary for the Education Division, Hopkinsville Solid Waste for the Government Division, Brazeway and TRAD for the Industrial Division, and Calhoun and Company for the Professional Division. Hopkinsville Solid Waste, Hopkinsville Water Environment Authority, Heritage Bank and the Christian County Chamber of Commerce were honored with the People Helping People Awards.
Tracey Clark presented the J William Flowers Award to two deserving campaign chairs.
Thomas and Gates offered a quick thank you to their fellow campaign chairs.
Mayor Kemp and his wife and co-chair, Henrietta, ended the night with a great announcement for the 23 partner agencies served by the United Way.
The United Way Campaign total includes 307 Latham Society Members, 95 residential donations, and goal breaking contributions in nearly every division. United Way Executive Director, Jennifer Maddux says the road to the 2012 campaign was a rocky one, she ended by being turned down 10 times before an email from Carter Hendricks suggested the Kemps.
Maddux says most donors wake up every morning hoping to avoid a crisis.
She adds the $754,000 will help the 23 community organizations serve people in need.
