Senate Committee Approves Industrial Hemp Bill

Industrial hemp is one step closer to being a legal crop in the state of Kentucky, after the Senate Agriculture Committee unanimously approved legislation to license Kentucky farmers to grow hemp. Committee member, 1st District Senator Stan Humphries says the arguement for the crop is a strong one.

Former 3rd District Senator, and major supporter of the industrial hemp movement, Joey Pendleton says he was pleased with the outcome Monday morning.

Agriculture Commissioner James Comer testified on behalf of Senate Bill 50 alongside a virtually unprecedented lineup of the state's federal delegation: U.S. Senator Rand Paul and U.S. Representatives John Yarmuth and Thomas Massie all urged Kentucky's General Assembly to pass the bill to give the state an edge if federal restrictions on industrial hemp are eased. Massie, who has a family farm, has filed federal legislation to distinguish hemp from marijuana, and Paul plans to file a companion bill in the Senate again. Pendleton says he expects the state bill to pass the full Senate completely, but it could see resistance in the House.

A separate House bill on hemp will be taken up Wednesday at the House Agriculture committee.
