Dr James Selbe will remain President of Hopkinsville Community College, but will be subjected to disciplinary action in connection with an undisclosed incident. Dr. Selbe issued a formal apology for his actions during a noon media conference in the HCC Auditorium Building.
Selbe apologized for what he called a use of bad judgement, but did not disclose any details about what was involved.
Selbe also apologized to his family and the community and pledged a renewed effort toward leadership of the college.
Prior to reading from a prepared statement, Dr. Selbe told members of the media he would not be answering any questions. He made the statement following an hour-long meeting with the HCC Advisory Board at 10:00 and a brief meeting at 11:00 with the College faculty and staff. Vice Chair of the Board John Rittenhouse says they are glad that the whole situation is behind them now.
Notably absent from any of the proceedings Thursday was Kentucky Community and Technical College President Dr. Michael McCall, who placed Dr. Selbe on administrative leave Monday February 11th. McCall failed to notify HCC Advisory Board members of his action last Monday. The HCC Advisory Board, whose chief duty is to evaluate and oversee the President of the college, was blindsided by an email from McCall that was sent to staff members Tuesday and later forwarded to the board members.
Dr McCall did issue an official statement via email to the News Edge around 12:25, which says "The investigation revealed several isolated incidents which demonstrated poor judgment on Dr. Selbe's part. We respect the privacy of all involved and will not comment further on this personnel matter." McCall says providing faculty and staff with a positive and respectful workplace is a priority and they do not tolerate any violations of policies and procedures.
