GE-Hitachi has submitted a proposal that could help save many of the 1200 jobs at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant. The plant had been scheduled to close last year, but a deal reached in May kept it open for another year, enriching depleted uranium for the Tennessee Valley Authority and for a Washington state utility.
Reports say GE-Hitachi is proposing to build a new laser based uranium enrichment plant. Economic development officials in McCracken County say the project has the potential to become one of the larger employers in the area.
