DoDEA Awards $5.3 Million To Two Local School Districts

The Christian County Schools are receiving 5.3-million dollars to help military children transition in and out of the district and meet college readiness benchmarks. Most of the money is part of a grant presented by the Department of Defense to a consortium comprised of Christian County and Clarksville-Montgomery County School Systems and the University of Kentucky. Christian County Chief Instruction Officer Amy Wilcox says the grant is about reaching out to soldiers and their spouses with children in both districts.

The grant funding will provide increased access to technology as well as support for those students, especially in the area of reading.

Wilcox adds the University of Kentucky will play a major role in this venture.

Wilcox will be explaining the grant funding to the Board of Education Thursday night and will ask them to approve several new positions, to be funded through the grant. Community Education and Communications Director, Heather Lancaster says this will give the district more opportunities to host parent universities in different locations and in conjunction with Montgomery County.

The Department of Defense Education Activity grants are used to strengthen family-school-community relationships and enhance student achievement for military connected students. DoDEA awarded nearly 39 million dollars this year.
