Most Local Legislators Support State Budget

The 2014-2016 Kentucky Budget is headed to Governor Steve Beshear for his signature after being approved by both houses of the Kentucky General Assembly Monday evening. State Senators Whitney Westerfield and Stan Humphries, along with State Representatives John Tilley, Myron Dossett and Kenny Imes, all voted for the state budget. Representative Lynn Bechler was the only local legislator to vote against the measure.

Meanwhile all local members of the Kentucky General Assembly voted for the revenue bill known has House Bill 445, except 3rd District State Senator Whitney Westerfield. The budget agreement, that was hashed out over the weekend by a conference committee, calls for 189-million dollars in SEEK funding for schools. The budget also protects funding for medicaid, PVAs and prosecutors. The budget will also require smaller cuts to postsecondary education than originally proposed.

In addition, the budget bill includes pay raises of at least two percent for state workers and a three percent raise over two years for teachers.
