Cable Barrier Installation On I-24 To Begin Monday



The project to install median cable barriers along a 15-mile section of Interstate 24 in Christian County is set to begin Monday. The News Edge spoke with Keith Todd with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet about the project.


   
Kentucky currently has about 130 miles of barrier installed, most of it along interstates and parkways in urban areas. Locations selected for barrier installation are based on crash data from police reports. As for the primary purpose of the barriers.


   
Over the last four years there have been 13 fatal crashes on the 93 miles of I-24 in Kentucky. Five of those fatality crashes were a result of cross over collisions, with three of those occurring in Christian County, two in 2011, and one in 2013. As a comparison, interstates in Jefferson County recorded 26 crossover fatality crashes in about a four-year period prior to barrier installation. That number dropped to one after installation.

In addition to the 15-mile section starting construction next week, officials say two more sections of I-24 are likely to have cable barriers installed within the next few years, including a 7-mile section in Christian County from about the 86 to 93 mile marker.

As the work gets underway, engineers remind motorists to be alert for shoulder and lane restrictions in the work zone. Once anchor points are in place, the installation is expected to cover about 1 to 2 miles per day. The work zone will include a 55 mph speed limit with double fines and an enhanced enforcement presence. The work zone will be taken down for Easter and Memorial Day holidays.

As the cable barrier nears completion, transportation officials and the contractor will schedule a training session for police, ambulance, fire-rescue, wrecker operators, and other emergency personnel on the new feature and the best way to safely remove vehicles that hit it. Officials point out while median cable barrier is designed to stop passenger vehicles from crossing the median into oncoming traffic, it is not designed to stop commercial trucks. The anticipated completion date of the installation is June 15.
