The buildup can now officially begin about the possibility of a Triple Crown winner, after California Chrome picked up the second win in the series Saturday afternoon in the Preakness. California Chrome, who was impressive in his win at the Kentucky Derby, held off Ride On Curlin to win the second jewel of racing’s Triple Crown.
California Chrome got a clean break out of the gate, and stayed just off the lead until he took control of the race and held on down the stretch. The hype will now build for the next three weeks, as California Chrome attempts to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed, in 1978. Up next however, is the most grueling of the three races, the Belmont, which will be run in New York on June 7.
After Affirmed in 1978, many at the time thought the Triple Crown would become an easy task for the best horses, as there were three winners in just a six year period, with Secretariat in 1973, Seattle Slew in 1977, and then Affirmed in 1978. However, there has not been another Triple Crown winner in the 35 years since.
