UPDATE - Pennyroyal Center Announces Layoffs

The Pennyroyal Mental Health Center will lay off 15 employees in the next fiscal year due to state and federal budget cuts. Center Director David Ptaszek says with nearly 1.2 million dollars in coming state and federal funding cuts, he is taking the measure to maintain services in the eight county region that is served by the center.

He says they will continue to provide services but the cuts that forced the lay offs are to the Community Care Dollars which help indigent or low income patients receive care.

Ptaszek notes that while another center in Louisville has filed bankruptcy, they don't expect that level of action.

The most recent cuts come after several years of continued decreases in funding due to Medicaid Managed Care and continually increasing obligations to the state retirement system. Pennyroyal Mental Health employs around 500 people in the eight county region. These cuts represent about 3 percent of their total employment.
