Officials Comment On JSMC Job Reductions

Jennie Stuart Medical Center announced Wednesday that it will cut 70 jobs as part of an effort to reduce costs. The announcement comes after JSMC finished the second quarter of 2014 with an operating loss. According to Jennie Stuart Director of Community Relations Steve King, JSMC initially tried to offset losses by flexing staff and controlling key operating costs.

King said that the hospital staff was made aware of the impending cuts through face-to-face meetings with Jennie Stuart CEO Eric Lee.

King reiterated how, as a privately operated medical center, Jennie Stuart depends solely on federal, state, and private insurance reimbursements and has none of the financial relief other community hospitals can rely on.

King said the job cuts will occur through a combination of layoffs and an accelerated retirement program. The impact of the job losses and their effect on families is not lost on the hospital.

JSMC is offering severance packages, job training, and resume assistance for those employees affected.
