New life could be coming to the site of the former Postell Building if Hopkinsville City Council approves reallocating funding. Community Development Services Assistant Director, Holly Boggess says they would like to see Inner-City REZ money reallocated to cover improvements to the downtown area. Among the projects is rehabbing the property at the corner of South Virginia and 6th Streets, where the Postell Building burned in July 2016.
She says the Local Development Corporation obtained the land for$45,000 and thinks it will need an additional $18,000 to make it ready for building. Adjacent to the lot is land currently owned by the Land Bank Authority.
Boggess also proposed renovating the old Pennyrile Children’s Advocacy Center building on East 7th Street to become a business incubator, finishing the remodel of the Sudden Service Station into a restroom facility, and contracting for a comprehensive Downtown Strategy plan.
The Inner City REZ Committee recommends reallocating $159,460 already budgeted to cover the projects and to redesignate $32,000 from a lot acquisition line item. This would leave about $27,000 to be funded, but Boggess says volunteers have already committed to painting the interior of the Sudden Service Station and helping with construction cutting that price tag down further. After the favorable recommendation, the Committee of the Whole agreed to forward a municipal order to City Council approving the fund transfers.
