A passenger in a vehicle pulled over by police for a traffic violation was charged with trafficking marijuana. Hopkinsville Police report the traffic stop occurred Thursday morning around 1:20 at the intersection of Gilkey and Sanderson Drives.

During the stop, officers say they smelled an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and when the passenger, 21-year old Mikayvion Merritt, got out of the vehicle he had marijuana visible on the front of his pants. Police searched Merritt and reportedly found pot in his front pocket as well as a glass jar containing loose marijuana and two separate bags inside the vehicle. Police indicate Merritt admitted the weed in the vehicle belonged to him.

Merritt was taken into custody and booked into the Christian County Jail charged with Trafficking Marijuana Less Than 8 Ounces, and Tampering with Physical Evidence after he moved the marijuana into his pocket when the traffic stop occurred.
