Mayor Carter Hendricks will proclaim May as Historic Preservation Month in the City of Hopkinsville next week. Historic Preservation Month is celebrated in May across the United States, a month dedicated toward celebrating communities’ history, culture and special places.

The City of Hopkinsville has been a Certified Local Government under the Kentucky Heritage Council’s preservation program since 1988 and, according to a release, strives to promote public policy geared toward preserving historic resources, buildings, sites, structures, and places. With nearly 50 sites throughout Christian County listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Holly Boggess with Community and Development Services says the City understands the importance these assets play in the fabric of the community. She notes the two residential historic districts of Mt. Pleasant and Anvirdale showcase how private individuals come together for a common cause and engage themselves in the practice of preservation. Likewise, she says the Downtown Renaissance District showcases the importance private and public partnerships can have toward revitalizing the City’s Central Business District.

To date, Boggess points out the City has partnered with over 40 businesses through incentive programs such as the Inner-City Residential Enterprise Zone (ICREZ) Program, earmarking approximately $667,000 for private downtown revitalization projects. She notes these matching funds have leveraged over $4.9 million dollars in private investment and continue to be a source of preservation, restoration and business start-up expenses.

Mayor Hendricks notes in the release the preservation of the City’s local resources contributes significantly toward the community’s overall health and they are honored to be a part of the movement and momentum currently taking place in the Downtown Renaissance District. He encourages others to become a part of that culture as well.

The public is invited to the proclamation declaring May 2018 as Historic Preservation Month in the City of Hopkinsville Tuesday afternoon at 5:45 in the Council Chamber of the Hopkinsville Municipal Center.
