Hopkinsville Man Named International Truck Rodeo Winner

A three and a half-year veteran at Hopkinsville Solid Waste was named the City’s first National Champion at the International Truck Road-E-O, which was held as part of the annual meeting for the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) in Denver, Colorado last month. Jason Smith, who serves as a Route Specialist, outmaneuvered 57 other drivers to be named the best Automated Sie-Loader operator in the nation.

During the Hopkinsville City Council meeting Tuesday night, Mayor Carter Hendricks recognized Smith’s accomplishment.

Hopkinsville Solid Waste Enterprise General Manager Tony Sicari said in a release he couldn’t be more proud of the solid waste team who placed at the state level and represented Hopkinsville Solid Waste so well nationally. He added they are especially excited for Smith who demonstrated the level of professionalism and skill they have among local staff.

According to the release, SWANA serves over 8,000 members throughout North America and has been the leading professional association in the solid waste field for more than 50 years. SWANA’s mission is to advance the practice for environmentally and economically sound management of municipal solid waste in North America. SWANA is made up of chapters in each of the fifty states, with Hopkinsville Solid Waste belonging to the Western Kentucky Chapter. Sicari has also served as on the chapter’s board of directors since 2012.
