Christian County Public School board members approved an addendum to the Code of Behavior and Discipline which would give principals more discretion on dealing with student terroristic threatening cases.

During the special board meeting workshop Thursday night, Director of Pupil Personnel Melanie Barrett presented the change to one section of the terroristic threatening code of behavior.

School board attorney, Jack Lackey, Jr. explained this would give principals a little more leeway in those cases in which the threats not as serious.

After making a change in the spring to bring terroristic threatening cases to the board, he noted they have had a lot of student hearings this school year. He said not all of the cases are situations that principals recommend expulsion. In fact, he added many of them are not.

Since August, Barrett noted they have had 15 student hearings compared to 9 student hearings for very serious offenses during the 2017-2018 school year.

Board chair Linda Keller said she would like to see reminders sent to parents and students regarding terroristic threats after the Fall, Christmas and Spring breaks.

Board members unanimously approved the change, which will be effective January 1, 2019.

In other business, board members approved the BG-1 for the re-roofing 200 wing at Hopkinsville High school for an estimated amount of more than $331,000. Chief Operations Officer Brad Hawkins said Swift Roofing has determined this section of the roof is beyond patching and would need to be redone.

The next regular school board meeting will be Thursday evening, October 18 at 6:00.
