Oak Grove Council Candidates Discuss Growth For City

Growth for the city was the main topic echoed by candidates running for city council in Oak Grove Tuesday evening during the Christian County League of Women Voters forum.

During opening comments, incumbent council member Kisha Jeffrey says she will continue to serve demographics who are not well represented on the council.

Cristina Jackson wants to see more in the city for children and young adults to do.

Carol Lowther has been a resident of the city for nearly 40 years and wants to see the community operate more efficiently than it is currently.

Roger Joiner says he would like to see free healthcare for children.

Isaiah Spencer says he is running to stand up for his city.

Incumbent Janet Edward adds the city is in a position not many cities get to experience in the 21st century with the potential to see a horse racing track built in the city. Edward says she would like to see the city have a main street.

Incumbent Jean Leavell has been a resident of the city for over 40 years and says the city needs to improve the quality of life for children.

Incumbent Jackie Oliver believes in fiscal responsibility and she says that is why she was the only council member to vote no for the city’s current budget.

James McKnight served on the city council previously and says it’s time for the government to be careful about promising things it can’t deliver.

Candidates also talked about other issues for the city including the possibility of a horse racing track, with most of them in support of the track and about new sidewalks being built for citizens.

The forum was held at the Oak Grove Community Center. The League of Women Voters will host another forum Thursday evening at 6:00 for Oak Grove mayor candidates.
