Several community members and Gander widows attended a groundbreaking at the renamed Gander Memorial Park Tuesday afternoon.
Hopkinsville Mayor Carter Hendricks says renaming the park from Fort Campbell Memorial Park is reassuring the commitment made by the city that the tragic event of December 12, 1985, will never be forgotten.
248 U.S. servicemen stationed at Fort Campbell and eight crew members passed away after their plane took off and crashed in Gander, Newfoundland.
Acting Senior Commander of the 101st Airborne Division Air Assault, Brigadier Todd Royar thanked the community for all the support they have received.
Gander widow Amy Gallo adds widows appreciate everything the city has done for the park.
Gander Memorial Park is located at the intersection of Highway 41-A and the Pennyrile Parkway in Hopkinsville. The new sign will be installed within the next few weeks.
The Christian County Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs committee hosted the groundbreaking.
