Man Arrested After Jumping Into River to Evade Police

Police say a man wanted on several warrants for burglary and theft is in custody after he ran from officers during a traffic stop and jumped into the Red River in Clarksville Friday morning.

Clarksville Police Public Information Officer Jim Knoll says officers responded to shots fired call in the area of Providence Boulevard around 1:10 a.m. and stopped a vehicle on Riverside Drive that was leaving the area. Officers recognized the passenger as Damien Gray, who was wanted on several active felony warrants. As they approached the vehicle, Gray reportedly exited the vehicle, ran behind the Waffle House and jumped into the river in an attempt to escape from officers. Officers were able to convince him to get out of the water and Gray was arrested.

Knoll reports Gray was lodged in the Montgomery County Jail charged with seven counts of burglary, six counts of theft of property, two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, and vandalism.

According to Knoll, the warrants stem from over a dozen break-ins at storage units from Sinclair Drive and Hermitage Road, including the thefts of a motorcycle taken from one of the units and a truck taken from another business location. He says the about $15,000 worth of items were taken.

The investigation is ongoing and police say more charges are possible.
