Trigg School Board Hear First Reading Of 2019-20 Calendar

Trigg County School board members heard the first reading of the 2019-2020 school year calendar during their meeting Thursday evening.

Director of Student Services and Personnel James Mangles presented the proposed calendar which shows students returning back to class on Wednesday, August 7, and barring any make-up days the proposed last day of classes would be Friday, May 15, 2020.

Fall break would be a full week from October 7 through 11 and would coincide with the Trigg County Country Ham Festival. Thanksgiving break would be from November 27 to 29. Winter break would begin on Monday, December 23 with students returning back to class Monday, January 6, 2020.

The eleven-member committee who helped to make the proposed calendar included community members, teachers, high school principal Shannon Burcham, board member Gayle Rufli, and Mangles.

He adds this is just the first reading of the calendar and changes can be made to it before it’s approved.

Board members did ask if school were still in session, could the Primary Election Day on Tuesday, May 19, 2020, be used as a make-up day. Rufli brought up there is a state law that state employees can take a certain amount of time to vote. Superintendent Travis Hamby says they will look into the law and bring information back to board members before a decision is made on using that day as a make-up day.

The 2019-2020 school calendar will receive the second reading and be approved during the next board meeting.

School board members also learned of a potential danger that is lurking on the internet that could affect children within the district. Hamby presented a letter they sent home Thursday afternoon about the “Momo Challenge” that has recently resurfaced.
