Donate A Portion Of State Tax Refund To Fight Hunger

Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture Ryan Quarles is asking citizens to “check the box” on their income tax returns to help reduce hunger across the state.

Quarles reports nearly one in six residents, including one in five children, don’t know where their next meal will come from throughout the year. Every state income tax return includes the option to donate part of your refund to the Farms to Food Banks Trust Fund by checking the box on line 39 on Form 740.

Quarles adds the Farms to Food Banks Trust Fund awards grants to eligible nonprofit organizations that provide food to low-income residents. Those grants must be used to purchase surplus or unmarketable foods from Kentucky farmers. “Unmarketable” commodities may be out of shape, size, or have a cosmetic imperfection that makes them unfit to sell in a retail environment but are safe to eat.
