Current and former Christian County officials and members of the Durrett Avenue Neighborhood Association gathered to break ground on Joe Mumford Park Tuesday afternoon.
The park, which will be located on Woodmill Road between Sharpe and East 18th streets, will be the newest park constructed as a part of the Hopkinsville-Christian County WINS Initiative. The initiative looks to make wellness, infrastructure and neighborhood projects a top priority.
Hopkinsville City Council member Patricia Bell notes the idea for the park started around ten years ago under the leadership of former Mayor Dan Kemp.
Hopkinsville Mayor Carter Hendricks says Joe Mumford Park is so much more than a park.
He adds the park is full of possibilities and could be the next place where a well-known Hopkinsville resident is raised.
Christian County Fiscal Court Magistrate Maggie Ferguson says she just recently learned that Joe Mumford was the strongest advocate for making Durrett Avenue a part of Hopkinsville city limits.
The $750,000 recreational development project will feature a playground, full-sized basketball court, pavilion, restrooms, play fields, and lawn areas for gatherings.
