Parks in Crofton and Elkton have been awarded a grant for projects that involve rubber mulch. The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet (EEC) awarded over $500,000 in grant funding for benches, picnic tables, landscaping, walking trails and pour-in-place surfacing projects that utilize recycled waste tires.
Gordon Park in Crofton was awarded a grant for just over $12,450 for rubber mulch for park benches and picnic tables, while the City of Elkton City-County Park was awarded a grant for nearly $6,900 for landscaping and rubberized timbers.
State officials say the grants are available from the Waste Tire Trust Fund, established by the 1998 Kentucky General Assembly, which receives a $2 fee from the sale of each new tire in the state. The fund helps manage approximately five million scrap tires generated in Kentucky each year and promotes the development of markets for recycled tire products.
