Warmer months mean more growth in local vegetation and agriculture officials are reminding livestock owners that the best way to protect your herds is to be familiar with your lands and the various poisonous plants that are plentiful in the area.
Shane Bogle, Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources at Caldwell County Extension Office, says that Kentucky does have several poisonous plants and while most livestock leave them alone, when forages become scarce during drier months, it can cause issues.

He adds that one of the best ways to protect against these plants is to know your fields.

Bogle notes that most poisonous weeds grow near fence rows, pond banks, and under shaded areas.

He states that the threat level of poisonous plants also has to deal with the dilution factor.

Bogle expresses that the Extension Office has readily accessible resources to help livestock owners learn the different types of poisonous plants that are common in the area and how to get rid of them. He also explains that he is also available to visit farms and work with the owners to identify plants and even determine courses of action for removal.
