Longtime MSU Journalism Professor Passes Away

Longtime Murray State University journalism professor and Hopkinsville native Dr. Bob “Doc” McGaughey passed away Friday.

According to social media posts, McGaughey, who was professor emeritus and retired chairman of Murray State University’s department of journalism and mass communications, passed away at the University of Louisville Medical Center after a short, severe battle with leukemia.

McGaughey graduated and was the president of the class of 1961 at Hopkinsville High School. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism from Murray and his doctorate from Ohio University. In 1969, he would join the journalism faculty as an adviser to The Murray State News and an instructor and became chairman in 1974.

Funeral arrangements remain incomplete for McGaughey, who was 76.
