Christian County Schools Upgrade Punishment For Some Discipline Violations

Christian County school board members approved Thursday night updates to the code of acceptable behavior and discipline that would lengthen punishments for certain actions.

Director of Pupil Personnel Melanie Barrett presented the changes to the code of behavior and discipline, with the board unanimously approving all recommended changes.

Discipline updates for students in Kindergarten through fifth grade were brought up in a meeting with all elementary principals in the district. Length of punishment will be increased for any students who bully, commit indecent exposure, or threaten/harass staff members; with disorderly conduct added into the discipline structure.

Updates for all sixth grade – elementary, middle, and high school students include increased length of punishment for assault 1, indecent exposure, possession of all vapor products, and sexual assault; with rape added into the code.

In updates for the district, Chief Operations Manager Brad Hawkins notes a parent emergency guide will be distributed at the beginning of the school year to all parents and will soon be available online.

Hawkins hopes the guide will also help parents better understand what their students are talking about when they mention certain drills that are completed during the school day.

In other business, the board went over a required evaluation of Superintendent Mary Ann Gemmill.

Board chair Linda Keller says they ranked Gemmill as exemplary in the overall rating.

In other action, members approved to purchase seven new buses to replace some that are aging at the cost of just over $729,000.

The next board meeting for the district will take place Thursday evening, July 18 at 6:00 at the central office on Glass Avenue in Hopkinsville.
