Trigg School Board Discusses 4% Tax Revenue Increase

Trigg County school board members discussed options for their yearly tax levy during Thursday evening’s meeting.

During board member discussions, Interim Superintendent Tim McGinnis says the district has needs and they need to take that into account when deciding what direction to take.

After a short discussion with Finance Officer Holly Greene, board members voted unanimously to hold a public hearing before the next regular school board meeting on Thursday afternoon, September 12 at 5:30 to discuss a 4% tax revenue increase. The increase would see the real and personal property tax rate increase to 55.1-cents per $100, up about 2-cents from the 2018 rate. The rate increase would generate 4% more revenue for the school or more than $180,000 over the compensating rate, which would also increase the tax rate.

After the public hearing, the board will make a final decision as to raising the tax rate or leaving it the same. Board member Clara-Beth Hyde stresses it is important to have fair representation at the public hearing to discuss the potential tax increase.

McGinnis notes the school district has seemed to have remained conservative over the last decade, with board attorney Jack Lackey noting that state funding has decreased significantly for school districts.

In other business, members discussed the possibility of providing 50% of the funding needed to the Trigg County Fiscal Court to build a brick-backstop for the girls’ softball field at the recreation complex. McGinnis notes that the current bid the county has received shows that it could be an $8,000 investment for the district. A similar investment was made by the district and the county a few years ago to build a backstop for the baseball field.

Following a short discussion, the action was tabled until the board can take a look at the one viable bid that was given on the project to see if it was a local bid and make sure the bid is the cheapest that the project can be completed.

In upcoming events, the annual district-wide Meet and Greet will be held Monday evening, August 26 from 5:00 until 7:00 at the middle school. McGinnis says it serves as a time for parents to meet with community partners to see what they provide for Trigg County students. 106.5 WKDZ will be on hand for a live remote from the event from 4:00 until 5:00.

A special called board meeting will be held Thursday evening, August 29 at 6:00 to discuss bids received for the upcoming elementary school renovation project. During the meeting, a bid could be awarded, which would mean the project would move forward.
