Hopkinsville Rotary held a joint meeting with Kiwanis Tuesday afternoon to kick-off the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign.
This year begins the 129th year of the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign. From the humble beginnings of a captain’s start-up program in 1891, it has grown to be a highly recognizable holiday tradition.
Rotarian Brandon Killebrew and Kiwanian Angie Strader both took the stage to tell why they ring the bell. Killebrew says the first time he rang the bell he was touched by the display of generosity from the community.
He also read a Bible verse that represented what ringing the bell means to him.
Strader notes the Salvation Army is one of the most influental non-profits in the country.
Key Club member Lisa Croney says she has learned important life lessons from serving others.
Social Service Director Alisa Barton notes the Salvation Army has continued in their service to the community over the past year.
New to the Red Kettle Campaign this year is their partnership with ApplePay to open the option to donate digitally.During the meeting, Rotary and Kiwanis held a friendly competition to raise money for the Red Kettle Campaign. Though they agree the Salvation Army is the real winner, Rotarians won the competition by raising $712.00 while Kiwanians raised $242.67.
