Area legislators are looking at what could be an interesting session in the Kentucky General Assembly next year.
During the annual Pennyrile Area Development District Christmas Luncheon Monday afternoon, members of the assembly discussed some issues they would like to take care of, even though it will be a budget session and most agree it could be difficult with Democratic Governor-elect Andy Beshear.
1st District Senator Stan Humphries, who serves residents in Calloway, Lyon, and Trigg counties, says one of the first decisions they will make includes the possibility of donating $50-million to the University of Louisville to help with the recent closure of Jewish Hospital.
Humphries adds another thing they will be looking into is Senate Bill 1, which was passed earlier this year.
The bill requires school districts to make improvements to make their buildings safer and did not come with any additional funding from the state, meaning some districts are having a hard time coming up with the funds needed.
8th District State Representative Walker Thomas, who was recently appointed as the Chairman of Veterans, Military Affairs and Public Safety, notes one of his priorities is compact bills.
Thomas represents eastern Trigg County and a portion of Christian County in the Kentucky House of Representatives.
Other speakers during the luncheon included; Senator C. B. Embry, Jr. and Representatives Lynn Bechler, Chris Freeland, and Jason Petrie.
The Legislative Update Luncheon was held at the restaurant at Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park.
