Trigg County school board members learned about the progress being made with the elementary school renovation project and set the meeting schedule for 2020 during their Thursday night meeting.
Andrew Owens from Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects says lots of masonry walls are going up.
Also, some additional hazardous materials were removed from some corridors, while students were on winter break.
Owens notes the final hazardous material removal will happen during summer break in the science and social studies lab.
He adds the contractors are asking if the school district could extended summer break, as much as possible to ensure the district would have enough classrooms for the start of the 2020-2021 school year. Some conversations indicate the contracts would like the start date to be the first week in September, so the contractor could have all of August to finish up all of the classrooms. Board member Charlene Sheehan says “that is absolutely unacceptable”. No action was taken, with further conversations expected at future meetings.
The renovation project is expected to be completed in mid to late 2021.
Also, board members approved to continue the current school board meeting schedule of starting at the meetings at 6:00 PM on the second and fourth Thursday of each month.
Nonresident contracts for the 2020-2021 school year were also approved for Barren, Caldwell, Calloway, Hopkins, Lyon, Marshall, and Murray Independent schools. Board attorney Jack Lackey and Director of Student Services and Personnel James Mangels adds they are waiting for a contract from Christian County and will ask the board to approve that at a future meeting.
Trigg County students will not be in the classroom Monday, January 20 for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, with the next board meeting to be held Thursday, January 23.
