Hopkinsville City Council will vote on a motion to name Councilman Wendell Lynch Hopkinsville Mayor during the February 18 meeting.
The motion was made Councilman Terry Parker, with council members voting unanimously to approve the motion.
When asked why not make Lynch the Mayor effective Tuesday night, Councilman Parker said Lynch wants to help the council finish some business before taking over.
Lynch, who was named Presiding Officer during a special-called meeting Saturday, said he is honored by the support of fellow council members.
If city council approves the ordinance at the next meeting Lynch will serve as Mayor beginning March 1 and will continue serving until a special election in November. Lynch said he has not decided if he will be a candidate to fill out the remainder of the term.
The Mayor’s post was left vacant when former Mayor Carter Hendricks resigned Saturday to become the new South West Kentucky Economic Development Council Director.
City Council approved a resolution allowing the Hopkinsville Industrial Foundation to move forward with applying for a $500,000 Grant to construct a spec building on a 22-acre Kentucky Certified Build Ready Site in Commerce Industrial Park. Hopkinsville Industrial Foundation Board Chairman John Crenshaw says some work has already been completed at the site.
The resolution also allows Hopkinsville City Council to join with Christian County Fiscal Court to pay interest on a bank loan for the spec building project. The grant comes from the Kentucky Project Development initiative to build a 100,000 square foot building.
City Council approved the new city classification and compensation plan.
And Presiding Officer Wendell Lynch swore in new Hopkinsville Police Officers Shaun Moore, Troyvine Jefferson, Megan Little, and Maricela Williams.
