More information has been released about a two-vehicle accident involving a semi tractor-trailer on Interstate 69 in Caldwell County Friday.

Caldwell County Sheriff’s Deputy Brooke Dixon says that a preliminary investigation revealed that 18-year-old Chayse Fulkerson, of Owensboro, was traveling northbound on I-69 when for unknown reasons he left the roadway causing him to overcorrect and enter the median. Dixon adds that the vehicle then flipped several times through the median and came to a rest in the left southbound lane, directly in the path of a semi tractor-trailer driven by 60-year-old Michael Hogan, of Arkansas.

Hogan attempted to avoid a collision but ran over Fulkerson’s vehicle with a rear axle, sending the semi through the median where it came to a rest in the right northbound lane.

Dixon notes that Fulkerson was attended to by a registered nurse who witnessed the accident before being treated by Caldwell County EMS. He was then transported to Skyline Medical Center by helicopter for a head injury sustained in the collision. Dixon states that Fulkerson was released from the hospital over the weekend and was reportedly back to work on Monday. Hogan refused treatment at the scene.

Both southbound lanes and one northbound lane were blocked for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene. Southbound traffic was routed around the accident via the shoulder.

The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Kentucky State Police, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, Kentucky Department of Transportation, Air Evac, Caldwell County EMS, and the Princeton Fire Department.
