Visitors to Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area may see fire crews and smoke through Sunday as Forest Service wildfire officials begin seasonal prescribed burns at select sites in the park on Friday.
Forest Service wildfire officials say they will burn dry fuels to reduce available fuels and improve forest health and habitat diversity. They indicate fire staff will continue to look for other opportunities to conduct prescribed burning throughout this month.
According to officials, prescribed burns reduce the accumulation of dry fuels and recycle nutrients back into the soil. The prescribed burns that may be implemented in March include projects supporting wildlife and ecosystem management.
