CCPS Preparing For The Possibility Of Extended Closure

Christian County Public Schools’ Superintendent Mary Gemmill says the district is trying to prepare for what could occur in the coming weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following Governor Andy Beshear’s recommendation schools close for two weeks, Superintendent Gemmill made the decision to close schools for 4-weeks, which began on Monday, March 16 with students set to return on April 13th. The 4 weeks also includes spring break scheduled for April 3-10.

After the school board meeting Thursday night, Gemmill told the News Edge they are preparing for the unknown if schools are closed for an extended period of time. She said all school superintendents in the state have a conference call with the Governor Friday afternoon and she hopes to find out more information.

She said the days missed will not need to be made up because originally they had 10 Non-Traditional Instructiondays but the Governor has extended the number of days to 20 and the district is using 14.

In addition, Gemmill says they are preparing to transition board meetings online.

In board action, the final payment of $15,380 for the pool air handler repair for Hopkinsville High was approved.

Board members also awarded and approved several bids for Fiscal Year 2020-21.

The board also recognized Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School, Hopkinsville Middle School, and Christian County High School for receiving the February High Attendance Staff Award, and Indian Hills Elementary School, Christian County Middle School and Christian County High School for receiving the February High Attendance Student Award.

The next regular school board meeting will be Thursday evening, April 16, at 6:00 in the Board Room at the Central Office.
