Retiring HMS KYA Advisor Honored With Special Parade

Former and current Hopkinsville Middle School (HMS) students honored a special, retiring teacher Wednesday night.

HMS Co-KYA Advisor Kim Batts tells the News Edge they hosted a parade for Shelley Long. She adds Mrs. Long has been teaching for 22 years and served 16 years as a Kentucky Youth Advocates (KYA) Advisor.

During her 16 years as a Co-KYA advisor with Batts, they had students elected to all KYA positions and earned all possible awards, including Conference Life Award, Inducted one to the KYA Advisor Hall of Fame, Best Delegation, and Delegation of Excellence.

During Long’s career seven KYA Governors, one Speaker of the House, and two Presidents of the Senate were elected from Hopkinsville Middle School.

Several students could not join in the celebration because of college finals or other obligations but sent their words of appreciation, including UK Law student, Fletcher Lyon. He was the first Kentucky Youth Assembly Governor elected from Hopkinsville Middle School.
