HPD And CCSO Honor Fallen Law Enforcement Officers

The Hopkinsville Police Department and the Christian County Sheriff’s Office came together over the weekend for National Police Week, May 10 through May 16, to remember and honor the officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was not open to the public but that didn’t stop police Chief Clayton Sumner and Sheriff Tyler DeArmond from holding a virtual service Sunday and posting it to social media. Sheriff DeArmond said they would forever be grateful for the fallen officer’s sacrifice.

Sheriff DeArmond then read some of the names of the fallen officers.

Chief Sumner finished reading the names of the fallen officers including Hopkinsville Police Officer Phillip Meacham, who was fatally shot in the line of duty in March 2018.

He then asked the community to remember the fallen officers.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officer Memorial Day and the calendar week in which the day falls as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
