State Health Officials Continuing to Watch Flattening COVID-19 Rate

Kentucky health officials are continuing to monitor the state’s COVID-19 rate as it compares to states that have seen a recent spike in cases due to the relaxation of reopening phases.

Kentucky reported 282 new cases of the coronavirus Monday and five new deaths. There were 408 people reported hospitalized in the state with COVID-19 and 75 in intensive care, which is a small increase from a week ago.

Public Health Commissioner Dr. Steven Stack says hospitalizations are part of the metrics they use to watch the COVID-19 case rate in Kentucky.

Dr. Stack says the number of cases and positivity rates are also included in determining the rate at reopening the state and whether restrictions need to return.

He said Kentucky has flattened the COVID-19 rate faster than other states because of restrictions put into place early.

Dr. Stack reminds people to continue to practice handwashing and mask-wearing to continue to slow the spread.

In the state’s long-term care update, the number of cases in those facilities represents 18-percent of the state’s COVID-19 total and 64-percent of the state’s deaths.

Kentucky is also closing in on 4,000 recovered individuals with 3,990 falling into that category Tuesday.
