Cadiz Vietnam War Veteran Presented Quilt Of Valor (w/Video)

A war veteran and Trigg County resident was honored with a Quilt of Valor during a ceremony at the Cadiz VFW Post #7890 Saturday morning.

Phyllis Myers, a volunteer with the Golden Quilts of Valor Foundation based in Elkton, presented the quilt to William G. Lawrence of Cadiz who served in the Vietnam War. She shared how the Quilts of Valor Foundation got started in 2003 by Catherine Roberts who had a son deployed in Iraq.

She added Roberts awarded the first Quilt of Valor in November 2003 at the Walter Reed Medical Center to a young soldier in Minnesota who lost his leg in Iraq. Through Roberts’ vision, Quilt of Valor groups started across the United States. Since that time, Myers said over 250,000 Quilts of Valor have been awarded.

She then emotionally explained the three-layers that made up the Quilt of Valor presented to Mr. Lawrence.

After Lawrence was covered with the quilt, he recalled that his time in Vietnam was tough leaving his family behind.

He then thanked everyone and the VFW post for everything it has done for the community.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the ceremony inside the post on Lafayette Street in downtown Cadiz was limited to VFW and Auxiliary members, and Lawrence family members.

Anyone who would like to make a tax-deductible donation to the non-profit organization may do so by clicking here or by making a check out to the Quilts of Valor Foundation and mailing it to QOVF Group #24984, P.O. Box 191, Winterset, IA 50273.
