A Dawson Springs man charged with the attempted murder of a Christian County Sheriff’s deputy was found dead in the jail Thursday morning.
Christian County Jailer Brad Boyd says 32-year-old Bradley Dunning was found just before 8 am by jail staff during routine checks on inmates in isolation and detox. A news release says Dunning used a shoestring and tied himself to a towel hook located in his shower stall.
The Christian County Coroner’s Office says his death was an apparent suicide.
Boyd says Dunning had shown no signs of being suicidal.
Dunning’s charges stem from the night of June 6 when Christian County Sheriff’s Deputy Brandon Myers was on routine patrol in the area of Eagle Way Bypass and Pennyrile Parkway and saw an ATV that had wrecked.
Deputy Myers got out of his cruiser to help the operator, later identified as Dunning, who was claiming that he was injured. When Deputy Myers tried to provide aid, Dunning pulled a handgun and tried to shoot the deputy in the head, however the weapon malfunctioned and did not fire.
Deputy Myers was able to take Dunning into custody and called for backup.
Dunning was indicted for three counts of attempted murder of a police officer, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, receiving stolen property under $10,000, first-degree burglary, first-degree criminal mischief, and first-degree persistent felony offender.
