Motorists traveling through Lyon, Caldwell, and Trigg counties along Interstate 24 need to be aware of a 7-hour detour for eastbound traffic Tuesday evening.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Keith Todd says a temporary closure will be put in place around six Tuesday evening until about one Wednesday morning near the 56 mile marker in Lyon County. He adds the temporary closure is to allow extensive pavement patching and shoulder repairs along the eastbound one-lane section of I-24 in the extended work zone between the 52 and 65 mile marker, which stretches through Lyon, Caldwell, and Trigg counties.
Todd states during the closure there will be a marked detour for eastbound traffic along KY 139 South through downtown Cadiz to US 68 East to return to I-24 at the Cadiz Exit 65 interchange. Motorists traveling along KY 139 near the Exit 56 interchange should be prepared to encounter delays as flaggers will be controlling traffic to allow vehicle exiting I-24 to access KY 139 South.
Todd notes KYTC is also recommending an alternative route for eastbound traffic at the I-24/I-69 exit 25 interchange near Calvert City. Motorists can take I-69 southbound to US 68 East at the Draffenville exit 47 interchange to return to I-24 eastbound at the US 68 Cadiz exit 65 interchange. This will allow motorists to avoid traffic backups along the main detour.
Oversized loads will be directed to pull over and wait for the work to be completed as overweight and over-dimensional loads will not be allowed along the detour through Cadiz.
There should be minimal impact to westbound traffic during this closure.
