Aaron Acree Appointed Trigg County Sheriff

A former Cadiz Police Officer and a current Kentucky State Trooper will be the new Trigg County Sheriff.

Trigg County Judge-Executive Hollis Alexander announced Tuesday morning Aaron Acree will be appointed sheriff to fill the remainder of Jason Barnes’ term in office.

Alexander says he feels like Acree is the right person to rebuild the sheriff’s department.

He adds Acree, who will take over his new duties on September 1, brings a great deal of experience to the office.

Acree is a Trigg County High School graduate. He began at the Cadiz Police Department in 2011, where he received statewide awards for DUI and occupant enforcement.  Acree left the Cadiz Police to become a state trooper, graduating from the KSP Academy in 2015.

Acree is the first African-American Trigg County Sheriff. He is also the first person to be appointed Trigg County Sheriff since Luther Thomas was appointed warden at the Eddyville Penitentiary. Mary Grace Thomas was appointed to fill out the term in September 1961.

It’s the third time in the past century that a Trigg County Sheriff has been appointed. The other time was 1952 when W.C. Broadbent died in office. Lurline Humphries was appointed in 1952 to fill out the term.

Jason Barnes announced he is leaving as sheriff at the end of the month. Alexander called it a resignation, while Barnes said he was retiring.

Acree will take over command of a sheriff’s department that is under investigation by the state police and FBI for sexual misconduct.
