The state of Kentucky reported nearly seventy COVID-19 related deaths during the first part of the Christmas Holiday weekend.
In his report issued Saturday Governor Beshear said there were 53 COVID-related deaths on Christmas Eve, eleven reported Christmas Day and four deaths reported Saturday. He said Kentucky had 2,742 new COVID cases on Christmas eve, 1,803 new cases on Christmas day and 764 cases Saturday.
Although the state’s positivity rate slipped to 7.95 percent on Christmas day, the Saturday positivity rate inched back up to 8.04 percent. As of Saturday 1,511 people remained hospitalized, with 396 patients in the ICU, and 237 people on ventilators.
The deaths counted on Christmas eve included a 71-year-old man from Christian County, 74 and 77-year-old men from Hopkins County, and an 86-year-old man from Trigg County.
Governor Beshear Saturday the number of deaths announced over the holiday was truly heartbreaking. He said the good news is the positivity rate continues to decline. Beshear thanked Kentuckians for making the sacrifice to celebrate the holidays this year to protect each other.
