A Hopkinsville man was charged with assaulting a police officer during an investigation Monday night.
Hopkinsville Police say they went to the Little River Motel in reference to a mental health warrant. As officers were talking with a neighbor, the door to the room of the wanted person opened. Officers could reportedly see half of someone’s face through the door, but when they approached the door it was shut and locked quickly.
Police say the person behind the door, 36-year-old Brandon Smith, told them he was not going to open the door and he didn’t have to tell them who he was. When officers attempted to open the door, Smith reportedly hit them with a metal cable.
Officers used a tazer to gain control of Smith before arresting him. Smith was charged with third-degree assault of a police officer.
Police say Smith was not the person they were originally looking for in reference to the mental health warrant.
