Well Known Trigg Educator And Council Member Remembered

The Cadiz-Trigg County County community is remembering Mrs. Juanita Oates who passed away January 25 in Washington, DC.

Mrs. Oates taught school for 36 years. She began teaching in Georgia and taught for a number of years in Trigg County.

After her retirement from teaching, Mrs. Oates began a career of public service. She was the first African-American elected to Cadiz City Council. She served on the city council for 20-years. Mrs. Oates was well-respected by the mayors and council members she served with.

Mrs. Oates also served 18 1/2 years on the Trigg County Hospital Board. She also an active member of Second Baptist Church.

Mrs. Oates was honored for her service to the community by having a city park dedicated in her honor.

Mrs. Oates was a graduate of Fort Valley State College in 1950.

She was married to the late Edward Oates. She is survived by her daughters Myrtle Oates and Mary Oates Walker. She also has four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
