Superintendent Chris Bentzel announced Thursday night that project graduation will not be in person this year, but they are moving forward with in-person graduation ceremonies on May 21 at the Stadium of Champions.
During the Christian County school board meeting, Bentzel said they have not been able to do any fundraising for project graduation this year because of COVID-19. He added project graduation will not be in person this year but they have a plan to do some nice things for the seniors.
As previously reported by the News Edge, the board approved graduation ceremonies for Christian County High School at 5:30 and Hopkinsville High School for 8:00 on Friday, May 21 with a rain date on Saturday, May 22. Bentzel said the one thing that will change dramatically for the in-person outdoor graduation ceremonies this year will be the stadium orientation.
As far as tickets for graduation, Bentzel said they don’t have a number yet but plan on getting the information to the Seniors by the first of next month.
He added there will be limited capacity for parents.
In addition, Bentzel said they are going to make sure they maintain as many COVID requirements as possible but it’s important they honor the seniors with an in-person graduation ceremony.
He also said parents will be given a list of guidelines to follow when they arrive at the stadium.
Board members also heard a presentation from Assistant Superintendent Josh Hunt regarding safe-school considerations after an incident at Hopkinsville High School last month when a gun in a student’s backpack accidentally discharged. Hunt has been looking into metal detectors and spoken with the Director of the Kentucky Center for Safe Schools, John Akers and Ben Wilcox, the state’s school security marshal, and heard more cons than pros. He pointed out they pushed the Stop Tip Line, which is already in place in Christian County schools.
The next board meeting/workshop will be Thursday evening, May 6, at 6:00 at the Central Office on Glass Avenue.
